I have one question that has perplexed me for a number of years.  I love playing 500, which is similar to Bridge, but much easier to learn.  In this game, there are left and right bowers.  Now, I know that the word bower is derived from the German word "bauer" (farmer).  But, my question is why the "bauers" are so powerful.  They rank right below the joker in 500.  Is there a card game in Germany where the "bauer" /farmer is so powerful?  Any answer would be greatly appreciated.
