Onomastics

By one of those curious coincidences that make life so interesting, I came across the word "onomastics" on the same day the topic about given names was posted.

(My reading material was Anatoly Liberman's Word Origins.)

Very cool, dilettante! That book is a chewy (but tasty!) treat. Some of it is slow going, but it's a useful look at the way etymologists do their work, no?

As you say, it's interesting but sometimes a bit much for the non-etymologist.

And - double serendipity! I didn't know until this morning that you mentioned "onomastics" on the show this week!

If it's a chewy treat, and it's a book about proper nouns, do you have to onomasticate it to get the most out of it? (Sorry, I just couldn't resist…)
