The American Dialect Society, founded in 1889 at Harvard University, has always had in its member roster a comfortable mixture of professionals and amateurs. Has a quarterly academic journal and a very active, open-to-all email list.

The Dictionary Society of North America publishes an annual journal and holds a biennial conference.
