Full Reference List: Pronunciation Guides

Cruttenden, Alan, ed. Gimson’s Pronunciation of English, 6e. Arnold: London, 2001. Covers the phonology of English, the range and types of sounds which make up its words. This is not a reference work in which you can look up words. Highly technical and academic, but even the casual reader may find something of interest.

Elster, Charles Harrington. The Big Book of Beastly Mispronunciations. Houghton Mifflin: Boston and New York, 1999. Conservative and safe, but dismissive of common pronunciations that are matter-of-factly accepted by authoritative dictionaries. Lots of notes and explanations.

Oxford Pronunciation Dictionary for Current English. Oxford University Press: London and New York, 2003. Offers equal coverage of British and American English. Strictly pronunciations: no notes or explanatory material are given with the words.
