I was talking to an old college buddy recently and a slang usage came up that I had not heard since graduating in the 1980s in Indiana.

The word is "throat". It was used as a derogatory term to describe a student that spends all his/her time studying and has little interest in socializing.

example usage - "Don't bother inviting Dave to the party, he's a throat"

Anyone else familiar with this usage or know the origin?

I grew up in the West, and I haven't heard that one. But you may want to take a look at the contemporary slang usages of throat in the online Urban Dictionary. Very interesting!

TexasGiant, I wasn't aware of that usage, but I'm looking at a slang dictionary that says it was U.S. college campus slang and a shortening of "cut-throat," which makes sense if you think of a someone who spends lots of time studying because he's super-competitive.
