"Toot Your Own Horn"

I have been thinking about the phrase "toot your own horn." I know that Jesus tells people in Matthew not to announce their "gift" giving with trumpets. Royalty has traditionally been announced by the blowing of trumpets, but does anyone know where this phrase came from? How old is it? I'm sure that the idea must have been around before the mention of it in Matthew.
