Surprising Reasons to Help
Here’s a surprising fact: A Way with Words doesn’t get a dime from NPR. In fact, it’s the other way around: We pay NPR thousands of dollars a year to distribute our show on its satellite system.
Here’s another surprise: A Way with Words also doesn’t get a dime from any radio station. That’s right: we give the show to your public radio station at no cost.
And one more: we give the show away on iTunes, on SoundCloud, on Swell, on our website, and on many other audio and radio websites and streaming services.
So who pays for the show? You do!
At least half of our funding comes from you, which is why we ask you to give.
The rest of the funding comes from like-minded organizations who see the great support we get from our listeners (you) and decide to join you in supporting us. They don’t give unless you give.
Why We’re Different
A Way with Words is one of a handful of independent national shows on public radio.
We do the show ourselves, from top to bottom. We make it, we ship it. We don’t work for a big corporation. We work for you.
It’s a labor of love for us. We put your donations back into crafting the show.
Why do we distribute the show for free?
The key financial reason is that the amount stations could pay us wouldn’t even begin to cover the cost of producing the show. Many stations struggle to pay even minimal amounts for very good shows that are much bigger than ours.
But more importantly, we give the show away:
- Because we believe in the educational mission of public radio.
- Because we’re out to change the way people think and talk about language.
- Because we believe everyone, including you, should be able to hear this sort of radio, whether or not you can afford it.
